HSK Level 4 refers to the fourth level of the Chinese Proficiency Test.

Content and Format

· Listening: It takes about 35 minutes and there are a total of 30 questions. The question types include multiple-choice questions, fill-in-the-blank questions, etc. The listening materials involve dialogues and short passages in various aspects such as daily life, society, culture, and the economy. The speaking speed is moderately fast, and some colloquial expressions and idiomatic phrases will appear.

· Reading: It takes approximately 45 minutes, with 30 questions in total. There are question types like multiple-choice questions, true or false questions, matching questions, and sequencing questions, etc. The reading materials cover a variety of writing styles, such as narrative essays, expository essays, argumentative essays, and practical writings. The length and difficulty of the articles have further increased, requiring candidates to have strong reading comprehension abilities as well as analysis and summarization skills.

· Writing: It takes about 30 minutes, with 15 questions in total. Candidates are required to write complete sentences in Chinese according to the given words and pictures, or complete short passage filling according to the prompts. This examines candidates' Chinese character writing norms, grammatical application, and the accurate collocation ability of vocabulary.

Vocabulary Requirements
Students need to master about 1,200 commonly used Chinese characters and 2,500 to 3,000 commonly used words. The vocabulary coverage is wider, including some idioms, common sayings, fixed collocations, etc., such as "qiān fāng bǎi jì" (by every possible means), "zǒng ér yán zhī" (in a word), "yī mǎ dāng xiān" (take the lead), etc.

Ability Requirements
Students who have passed the HSK Level 4 are able to have in-depth conversations in Chinese on various topics, and are capable of understanding and expressing more complex thoughts and viewpoints. In terms of listening, they can understand daily conversations at a moderate speed and the content of general radio and TV programs. In terms of reading, they can read different types of articles such as newspapers, magazines, and novels, and understand their main ideas, detailed information, as well as the author's intentions, etc. In terms of writing, they can write relatively coherent and smooth short essays in Chinese, express their own opinions and ideas, with fewer grammatical errors and more accurate and rich vocabulary usage.
